This leitmotiv refers to the ideas – the seeds – that everyone in the CEU community should seek to plant in the minds of others. Through hard work and care, each seed can prosper and grow into a strong, leafy tree. It will stand alongside others, making up a forest – one which can make the world a better place.
A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since the Bologna declaration at the end of the 1990s. It was the project began to establish the European Higher Education Area – the aim being to make higher education across the continent more inclusive, accessible, attractive and competitive.
We’ve now been in the Valencian Community for 50 years. It’s time to look back, to reflect on the present, and to think about CEU’s future, together with everyone who has contributed to this project: students, families, staff, associates, partners, and friends.
Why Not? It is the how we see the world. How we question the way things actually are. Why Not? These two words help us cross frontiers. See the world through other eyes. The right question today is not Why? but Why Not?

![]() I would like to give you a very warm welcome to the CEU Cardenal Herrera University, part of the San Pablo-CEU University Foundation, and which has been present in the Valencia region since 1971. I would also like to thank you for placing your trust in us as the place for your academic and professional growth for the next years. This period will be key for your academic development, but also for your personal growth. The purpose of a university is not only to transmit thought and culture, but also to help students to think for themselves and to learn to love culture in all its forms: science, art, and humanism, all together. I see the University as a place to study in, but also as a human community in which your relationship with your lecturers and fellow students will enrich you as a person, give you the opportunity to strike up new friendships, and discover new and thought-provoking horizons. Your university years represent a unique and unrepeatable opportunity, and that’s why I hope that you’ll be able to look back on your time at the University with great pleasure. When we say that what the activity of this University is based on the values of Christian humanism, the heritage of a large part of the world, what we mean by that is that we want our students to feel supported at all times by their lecturers – we want to make sure that they never feel alone when facing problems. They will always be able to find support from our lecturers and administrative staff, who can help them deal with any difficulties that may arise. This is the beginning of some of the best years of your life: years in which there will be a lot of work and study to do, but also years filled with moments of great happiness and companionship with those around you on campus. I give you the warmest of welcomes to the University and I wish you the very best for the years ahead with us.
